Powerful XVII century building, that up to XIX century maintained its double articulation as an urban residence, with one side looking at the square and the city wall, but also as a country villa, with the back garden looking north to the countryside, and a passage along the square arcades to unite both.It was built by the Crotta family, who arrived from Lombardy at the beginning of XVII century to run the copper mines of Valle Imperina, in the Agordo valley, and became very rich. They were able, in 1649, to pay the required sum to be admitted among Venice’ nobles during the long and expensive war of Candia, that required Venice to reopen its noble ranks to gather the necessary money to pay its military expenses. After the fall of Venice in 1797 and up to the final arrival of Austria in 1815, the palace became the seat of the military and political commanders who alternated at the guide of the city of Belluno.
